Maybe the Problem Isn't Motivation...

You know you should....
Reply to the email.
Start the assignment.
Make dinner.
Exercise.
Book the appointment.
Answer that text.

And yet... you don't.

Most of us have been taught to think these moments are a problem of motivation. Or discipline. Or willpower.
But I've started wondering if we're asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking, "Why can't I do this?"
I've become much more interested in asking, "What's getting in the way of accessing the part of me that can?"

I've come to believe that the answer often lies in our nervous system.
Our nervous system has one primary job: to protect us.
Whenever it senses challenge, uncertainty, overwhelm, pressure, or threat, it automatically shifts its focus toward protection.
This isn't a conscious decision—it's simply how we're wired. The trade-off is that as protection becomes the priority, our perspective naturally begins to narrow.

When that happens, it can become harder to access the parts of ourselves that help us think flexibly, connect with others, participate fully, or act in line with what matters most.
Those parts of us haven't disappeared.
They're simply harder to access while our nervous system is focused on keeping us safe.

That idea has completely changed the way I think about self-regulation.
To me, self-regulation isn't about staying calm all the time. It isn't about having perfect self-control.
It's about maintaining access to ourselves—even as life inevitably pulls our nervous system toward protection.

Over the coming months, I'll be sharing more about this perspective and how it's changed the way I understand ADHD, autism, anxiety, burnout, executive functioning, and so many of the struggles people bring to therapy.
Because maybe the goal isn't to become a different person.
Maybe it's learning how to keep finding your way back to yourself.
